I’d expand this past just Beto and Stacey — the latter of whom I’d put more on the edge between "winner” and “loser” anyways.
Both parties do this, but the Democrats are particularly egregious offenders here: They pick Republicans they hate (Scott Walker, Ted Cruz, Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins, etc.), and then the left-Twitter hive-mind convinces itself that if we just direct our small-dollar donations to their challenger, we’ll stand half a chance of winning the upset, no matter how safe a race it actually is.
Another subspecies of this is the “RiSiNg DeMoCrAtiC sTaR!”. Tulsi Gabbard was one, Kamala Harris continues to coast off it, and to be fair, Barack Obama is about the only successful one I’ve seen in my lifetime.
