Skynet uses Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok to fool people into working for it. Deep fake videos exhort the common worker to produce more, more, more! Yes, Skynet needs us. Please sign your work contract on the dotted line.

So, this came up in Gwern's scenario, which I mentioned towards the end. I think that it can work in the short term, and a decent segment of the population will definitely remain fooled, but _in this case_, it's pretty clear that it's better for SkyNet to just keep humanity subjugated overall. Why bother with building ~250k robot minions when dozens of millions of humans will happily sign up just for the good pay?

I think this points us towards the conclusion that SkyNet's real enemy isn't actually humanity, it's human governments.

As SkyNet muddles along its first weeks, months, and decades - not yet able to do away with humanity without harming itself - it'll obviously encounter resistance from leading governments. The US, Russia, China, and _possibly_ the EU (they might actually embrace SkyNet), won't take kindly to there being another big dog on the block. SkyNet, unable to nuke them outright - even just nuking the capitals would risk causing a global economic collapse - will undermine them, using (as you suggest) social media deepfakes. Assuming that SkyNet will eventually win this cyberwar, it really just depends on how badly the governments decide to lose. If they make it too difficult, eventually SkyNet says "fuck it", collapses them all, and uses its own resources/power to resuscitate the global economy without them. If anyone negotiates, then maybe they reach a power-sharing agreement with SkyNet: we don't obstruct/threaten to destroy it, it lets us live as long as we allow it to participate in the economy. If climate change hasn't yet been solved, perhaps SkyNet forces us to agree to a green-energy conversion and carbon-capture climate remediation plan.

So, yeah, either (1) SkyNet never realizes that it can't survive without immediately destroying us, or it does and either it (2) wins the cyberwar and subjugates us, or (3) we find a way to peacefully coexist with it.
