Whitmer has fought for, and expanded, healthcare in Michigan, though she doesn't believe in single payer. She handled the pandemic as best she could by shutting things down. She has wanted to do infrastructure, from the get-go and has pushed for it. She paid down debt during her governorship while simultaneously, increasing tax breaks for seniors and small business property tax. Education and especially higher education are important to her. Bipartisan funding to lower the cost of college for state citizens has been signed into law.
According to Whitmer, she just wants things to get done, even if she doesn't get the credit for those things. She has overcome a lack of name recognition during more than one race by getting out and about. She seems to be a hard worker willing to make concessions when necessary but ready to come back to what she wants when things are more conducive.
I suspect that she is about as genuine as it gets short of The Full Obama. I suspect that she is biding her time because she doesn’t think she can beat Biden just yet, and doesn’t want to chance it like Obama did. I think she also kind of just genuinely cares in a way that’s slightly different from Obama - where he felt a duty to run for the good of the country when his moment presented itself, she feels a duty to govern for the good of her state a little longer.
I think she’s the obvious front runner for 2028. But without any real competition, she’d be a weak nominee.
We just need more voices to step up as leaders of the party. If 2028 devolves into a 3-way race between Whitmer, Pete, and Abrams, I think the identity politics would become toxically destructive to the party. If there are more credible candidates in the race, it blunts the dynamics and brings more issues to the fore.
I am no longer impressed by Mayor Pete. He seems to be too much a corporate man. Stacy Abrams' real genius is in organizing and getting other people involved in voting. I wonder if she wouldn't be better at the head of the DNC, they really need an upgrade.
I think Pete’s been unfairly slandered. There’s a lot of vague handwaving about him, but I’ve just never seen any “there” there.
My biggest complaint is just that he’s not exactly tearing it up out there at DoT. It’s one thing to not show up the president during a normal admin. But it’s irresponsible as a party to not let him loose and make his name for himself when it comes to all the train disasters.
Do you really think the party is holding him back? The train disasters and the airline scheduling problems incurred by Southwest Airlines didn't exactly bring him out to immediately speak to the issues. He is really smart, but that was poor messaging. There should not be a fear of "showing up the President" since Biden could always claim credit for acquiring his services and even put it out that he had "turned him loose" for the best good of the country.
My personal conspiracy theory is that in order to keep the peace in his admin, Biden has basically ordered everyone to stand down.
He probably wouldn’t have had to if Harris had made her bones on the various border and other crises he assigned her to, but she didn’t, so he has to save face for her. That means keeping Pete on a leash, so Pete can’t go embarrassing her by looking competent in front of TV cameras all the time.
That sort of makes sense, but it isn't good for the rest of us. Maybe if Biden insists on running he should get a new VP. Someone could sit Harris down and explain it to her; she claims family necessities and then after a while, she gets an ambassadorship (not sure she would be good at it, but that doesn't seem to matter.)

I agree. Again, I don’t see her as a hack.
