That’s right folks, you heard it from me first… but reality has, as it always does, proven that the most absurd things frequently happen simply because they can.
I don’t want this to happen. It’s clownish, and could end extremely poorly.
But as so often happens with entrenched, failing establishments, the Democratic Party is ripe for a hostile takeover. My preference would be for an inspiring, Never Trump former Republican to stage that takeover, and forge a new synthesis between ideological conservatism and progressivism.
Real life isn’t written by Aaron Sorkin, though.
The reality is, SAS is one of the pioneers of the modern attention economy. His schtick on ESPN has mostly already played out by now. He’s clearly bored, and he’s clearly politically activated, like a certain orange psychopathic shitheel was back in 2011 or so.
And luckily, he’s not a psychopath! But the trend towards Caesarism in America is pretty clear, and it’s likewise clear that the Democratic Party is simply unable to course-correct itself into an electorally viable version of itself in time to save the country from Trumpism’s Caesarist slide — the time for that was several years ago, if not longer.
Trump’s going to do a lot of damage in the next few years, and that’s only going to further traumatize a helpless left, and antagonize desperate centrists/center-leftists like SAS. Since November, liberals have been casting about for their own “Joe Rogan Of The Left” and begging Mark Cuban to lead the charge, but Cuban is too old at this point: He’s stuck playing the same “will he/won’t he” game that was already fucking played out when Barack Obama did it almost 20 years ago.
That leaves us with SAS. Perhaps the basketball commonality between he and Cuban explains something here: Basketball is the most attention-based of the four major sports, and thus it makes sense that both men would have the skills needed these days.
But yeah. Again, I don’t like this one lick. But I do know the rhymes and rhythms of history… and this one’s tickling my spidey-sense.
Good luck to us all. SAS as our second Caesar is going to be one hell of a trip. Let’s pray that the Abundance folks can get in his ear and be the power behind the throne — it may be our last hope to restore democracy and turn this authoritarian flirtation into a mere interregnum.
Maybe. Like proto Dem Trump. I’ve never heard of the guy, but I read about him.
The party would lean way in too hard to his schtick, which would kill its appeal like it did with Walz’s small town schtick.
Hey, Chris Rock *did* say that electing Obama, the cream of the crop, didn’t mean America had gotten over racism; to do that we would have to elect a moron, a black Dubya. This guy is more Trump than Bush, but still fits.
"My preference would be for an inspiring, Never Trump former Republican to stage that takeover,"
Would a Never Trump former Republican be all that inspiring? One thing notable how little elite defections from Republican elected and retired Republicans have moved Republican *voters*. Kamala's endorsements from the Cheney's and the Bush family's disapproval for Trump have been politically irrelevant. They've seemed to have zero coattails.
